Zooid

Zooids are singular organisms which can combine to create larger organisms. They are commonly sold and exported, as they can combine with other organisms for beneficial purposes. Zooids are purchased with Silk as larva, and are allowed to meld with the area in which the purchaser, known as a Host, wants the Zooid to grow. Once mature, the Zooid will be controllable by the Host. Zooids can not only be placed upon the flesh of the host, but also on each other. This allows certain skilled Hosts to make themselves one man armies with the help of Zooid interference.

Zooids come in many varieties, from weaponry, to extra bio-mass to fit even more Zooids, to locomotive purposes, and more. Zooid larvae are extremely common, although the type of Zooid you wish to purchase may be rarer than others. To continue to grow Zooids without purchasing new larva, and to allow the colony to grow, one must purchase Nutrients. Nutrients are an algal blend of meat, algae, and dead Zooids which allow colonies to grow.

When one adds to many Zooids to themself, they require unique zooids to keep them in line. Otherwise, the massive Zooid colony will rebel against their master and try to overtake them. Unfortunately, this is not commonplace as these “controller” Zooids are extremely expensive. As such, massive uncontrolled Zooid colonies often block entire alleyways, all from a single corpse.

Zooids are commonplace on almost every organism in the Prime Material Plane.

Purchasable Zooids come in many different varieties, which will be listed below. This list is by no means exhaustive.

  • Harpoon – Harpoon Zooids are simple creatures, and as such cheap. They consist of a base, and a serrated spike connected to a sarcous tether. The spike can be launched, and then quickly pulled back to disembowel enemies.
  • Grapple – Grapples resemble Riftia pachyptila, and can fire a small, yet sharp, spike connected to a translucent cartilage tether. Grapples act as biological grappling hooks, and are quite expensive.
  • Nervefiber – Nervefibers are circular “controller” zooids made from bone and flesh-like tissue. Nervefiber can issue controls to other Zooids, and as such are necessary to keep larger amounts of Zooids in line.
  • Broodlauncher – Broodlaunchers resemble fleshy beehives, and harbor and unleash upon enemies wasp-like organisms.
  • Grasper – Graspers resemble human arms, although they appear to be made of reddish flesh and white bone. They often require a Hub to fully control.
  • Hub – Hubs are directly connected to the nervous system of the Host. They connect every Zooid together and control them on behalf of the Host brain. They are the most expensive Zooids.
  • Beholder – The Beholder is a special type of Zooid which allows the Host to peer into other planes of existence.
  • Bract – Bracts are buoyant airsacks which allow the Host to float in water, and depending on the size of the Bract, in air.
  • Gonophore – Gonophores allow Zooids to grow and expand without approval of the Host. While they are usually mistakenly added to the Host, some intentionally add them to create new Zooids exclusive to them.
  • Salvo – Salvos originated from a single apis Host, who added a Gonophore to their colony to create new Zooids. The Salvo is one of these new Zooids and it was quickly exported around the Prime Material Plane. It can fire a barrage of immensely long, thin, and sharp spines.
  • Upgrader – The Upgrader is a unique Zooid, it consists of a long tube which other Zooid projectiles can be shot through to coat them in toxic substances and increase their range.
  • Nectocalyx – The Nectocalyx is a bell shaped Zooid designed exclusively for swimming.
  • Spewer – The Spewer is a bio-organic firearm Zooid which spews acid from its prime orifice.
