Great Old Ones are ancient, unknowable lifeforms that predate all known life. They are unfathomably wise, intelligent, and enigmatic. They are a group of phenotypically unique, malignant beings of great power. They reside in various locations in Ja’luhhor’Alotha, and once presided over it as gods and rulers. They were either imprisoned or exterminated by the Arbiter during the Xothpurge.
History
While ancient, the Great Old Ones are predated by the ancient Ja’luhhor’Alothian protoforms, although their exact origin is completely obscured. The fossilized remains of deceased Great Old Ones have been dated back aeons, and predate the evolutionary adaptation of sapience as a whole. The most accepted hypothesis is that the Great Old Ones emerged from the deceased organic matter of the ancient protoforms, and eventually began to grow and adapt to their surroundings; becoming exceedingly old.
The Great Old Ones would grow sprawling kingdoms, growing across Ja’luhhor’Alotha as a whole. Eventually however, they would encroach upon what shouldn’t have been touched. The Organs of Ja’luhhor’Alotha are protected by the Dread Aura, an impervious defense which immunizes them from colonization and defilement by sapient or non-sapient organisms. While seemingly inaccessible, the organs were saturated with extremely valuable resources.
Through the power of their sorcery, the powerful Great Old Ones managed to create small areas in which the Dread Aura had no effect. Through obelisks to hone and expand this magic, the Great Old Ones encroached deep into the Organs of Ja’luhhor’Alotha. At this point, its superconsciousness had gained awareness of this fact.
The Arbiter was unleashed upon the Great Old Ones, along with its Penancekin to systematically destroy the Great Old Ones and their followers. In the following war, known as the Xothpurge, the Arbiter killed hundreds of Great Old Ones and wiped their existence from history. The survivors either surrendered, and were given lighter sentence, or evaded capture through fleeing. One notable outlier is Quam, who mechanized itself into an artificial being to evade the Arbiter’s notice.
The Xothpurge was a success, and while the Great Old One’s kingdoms fought with all their might, the unrelenting power of the Arbiter was unstoppable. The Great Old Ones were either imprisoned in the Maw, or outright slain. Their culture, infrastructure, and history would be razed and extirpated. Now, very little can be uncovered from this age of Ja’luhhor’Alotha.
